Course Reflection

Even though this is only my third course with Walden, it has been my favorite so far. This course has allowed me to re-think the ways I plan my school year. I have learned how to use more of the technology that is available for free download that I may not have thought of using, or even known about before. It has allowed me to consider whether the technology that I’m using is helping me do the same thing in a different way or expanding my students’ 21st century skills.

I have deepened my knowledge of teaching by brainstorming ways to revive my teaching. It is easy to fall back on the same lessons every year. This course has helped me consider ways to help my students learn not only technology skills, but teamwork and cooperation as a part of my art lessons.

My perspective has changed from one of using my technology for my convenience to finding ways that I can get the technology into my students’ hands. I also am trying to brainstorm ways to give my students more ownership of their learning through group projects.

I can continue to expand my knowledge by staying up to date on new technologies. I can begin this process by continuing with my Walden courses and by searching for new programs that I will be able to download for use with my students.

My two long term goals are to have at least one computer based project for each grade level during the year and to expand the technology available in my school. For the first goal, I will look for arts based internet sites appropriate for my younger students. Possibly I can find sites where they can see famous artwork or use templates to make basic computer art. Next, I will start with more basic computer art programs like MS Paint for the middle grades and add to the skills by working up to more sophisticated programs like Frames or Photoshop. As for adding to available programs, I will apply for more grants. I applied for a MICCA grant last year and was unsuccessful due to the amount of applications. I will try again in future years as well as research other grant opportunities. I will ask our PTA for money and try to organize my own fundraisers as well.
